  5.    GoldVarb 1.4 differs greatly from previous versions of GoldVarb,
  6. although the changes may not be obvious.  The two most important
  7. modifications are:
  8.  
  9.    • documents can now be of arbitrary length (although of course
  10.      limited by the amount of memory in the Macintosh you are using)
  11.      whereas they were previously limited to about 32K.  Reading
  12.      tokens from an external file is no longer supported because
  13.      no longer needed -- you just open the file and process it on
  14.      screen.

  16.    • A new file type (with its own icon) is now used for results, and
  17.      these result files are now treated similarly to the other three
  18.      types of files.  That is, commands such as “New…”, “Open…”,
  19.      “Import…”, “Close”, “Save…” & “Save as…” work similarly for
  20.      all four file types.  When you execute a command which generates
  21.      results (such as cell loading or varbrul), the results are
  22.      simply appended to the end of the current result document (if
  23.      already open on screen).  This means you end up with everything
  24.      contained in a single result file (unless you prefer to split
  25.      things up), rather than a proliferation of files with various
  26.      titles.  (By the way, the file you are now reading is a
  27.      so-called result file, prepared using GoldVarb 1.4).

  30.    Two important things have NOT changed:
  31.  
  32.    • Varbrul calculations are performed as before.  And the
  33.      multinomial case (more than two application values) has still
  34.      not been implemented.

  36.    • The “Recode setup…” dialog box, first implemented in version
  37.      1.3 (which became obsolete one nanosecond after it was created)
  38.      is the same in version 1.4.  It is quite complicated and has
  39.      not been fully tested, so it will probably undergo some
  40.      evolution in the very new future.

  47.    If not then you can skip the following discussion.

  49.    Because of the introduction of the new file type, you may have
  50. some trouble with your token files and the way they appear (i.e. the
  51. icon) in the Finder.  Token files used to be of type 'TEXT', but
  52. that appellation is now used for result files so token files are now
  53. of type 'TOKN'.  This means that old token files will appear with
  54. the wrong icon after you install GoldVarb 1.4, because the Finder
  55. will think they are result files.  (By the way, condition and cell
  56. files are of Finder type 'COND' & 'CELL' respectively.)

  58.    Here’s what you should do:
  59.    • Remove any old version(s) of GoldVarb from your disk(s) and
  60.      replace with the new version 1.4.
  61.    • Change your token files from type 'TEXT' to type 'TOKN'.  You
  62.      can do this with ResEdit, or by importing them into GoldVarb 1.4
  63.      and then saving, or, easiest of all, use the handy-dandy
  64.      utility programme “DoctorTokens” which you should find on
  65.      the same disquette as this file.  Once you have changed all
  66.      you old token files on all disks to type 'TOKN', you can
  67.      throw the doctor away.
  68.    • If after the above steps your token files still don’t say
  69.      “Token” on the icon, you probably need to rebuild the desktop
  70.      file (although this should, I believe, be unnecessary if you
  71.      are using the most recent System/Finder released by Apple).
  72.      To rebuild the desktop, eject your disk and then reinsert it
  73.      while holding down both the Option & Command keys.  If you’re
  74.      working with a hard disk, you will have trouble inserting it
  75.      into the little slot (ha ha) -- just reboot from the hard disk,
  76.      holding down the 2 keys as the Mac starts up.
  77.      (By the way, the desktop file contains any comments you may
  78.      have typed into the little box in the “Get Info…” window
  79.      which the Finder displays, and these comments will be lost
  80.      if you rebuild.  You will not lose default comments, i.e.
  81.      those which the Finder reads from the file its getting info
  82.      about.)
